Beaches

Empúries (15 minutes)

Former capital of the county of Empúries, Sant Martí d'Empúries is currently a charming town characterized by the conservation of a significant part of its medieval architectural legacy. In fact, Sant Martí is a population center that is administratively dependent on neighboring l'Escala, and that has practically not expanded outside its original walls.

Thus, we can still observe part of the structures and walls of medieval origin and the original layout of many of its streets. The town's main arteries end up converging in the Plaza Mayor, one of its main tourist attractions. Its entire architectural complex is protected as a Cultural Property of National Interest.

Cala Montgó (25 minutes)

This lovely large cove of fine sand is located in the territorial limits of the village, between l'Escala and l'Estartit. Thanks to its position, it is completely sheltered of the Tramontana wind. Thanks to its natural beauty and its urban environment, the beach is popular within tourists and families. There you will find adaptable showers and toilets, hammock rental, lifeguards, parking area, bar service and the possibility of practising some nautical sports. Easy to access walking or by car coming from l'Escala or l'Estartit,it is also posible to access the cove by boat. The beach is certified with” Blue Flag “ label.

Illa Mateua (24 minutes)

This cove received its name of the islet located in front of the beach. It is located North of Punta Montgo, at the end of Montgri Natural Park and is formed by rocks and surrounded by high steep cliffs, making of the place the ideal spot for scuba diving:as a matter of fact, at about 15 minutes swimming, divers can admire there the bow of French tug “Constantine”, sunk in 1963, thanks to the pure quality of the cove’s waters. It is a place you can easily access walking by the “Camino de Ronda”but also by car or by means of the turistic little tren “Carrilet”.

Gola del Ter (25 minutes)

It is a unique place on the Costa Brava, where the seawater meets that of the River Ter and from where you can observe, face to face, an extraordinary phenomenon: one of the best sunsets in the area -over the mouth of the Ter- and the rising of the moon over the sea, all at the same time!

Illa Roja (26 minutes)

Cove where nudism is practiced, it is one of the largest after Sa Riera. It is characterized by being presided over by a reddish rocky islet from which its name comes. Calm, without crowds, fine sand - pomegranate and transparent waters.

Platge de Pals (26 minutes away)

An immense beach, more than 2.4 km long, that combines a more urbanized area with numerous services with another practically virgin one, where the dunes and the itineraries that we can do on foot or by bike stand out. Until a few years ago, there had been here the recognizable and tall antennas of Radio Liberty, which the American government used during the Cold War to broadcast propaganda to the communist countries of the Soviet Union bloc. Now, without the antennas, this space has been preserved from urban speculation and is a natural environment. Also exposed to the waves and with a steep entrance to the water, the nearest parking is for a fee. The beach forms a continuity with that of Grau (Pals) and that of Racó (Begur).
